Dolly Rebecca Parton

Dolly Rebecca Parton was born on January 19 1946 in Pittman Center, Tennessee and was raised in Sevierville, Tennessee to Avie Lee Parton who was a housewife & Robert Lee Parton, a tobacco farmer. At 12, she was being telecast on Knoxville TV and at 13, she was already recording for an independent label and performing at the Grand Ole Opry. After having graduated from high school in 1964, she relocated to Nashville to launch her country-singing career. She became a fan of Carl Dean, who ran an asphalt-paving business; they got married on May 30 1966 and have remained together. In 1967 , her vocals caught the interest of Porter Wagoner, who hired her to perform on his show, The Porter Wagoner Show (1961). She remained with The Porter Wagoner Show for seven years. Their duets were well-known and she was invited to appear with him at the Grand Ole Opry. Her hit "Joshua" was released at the top spot in 1970 was her biggest single. She made the decision to go it alone, even though she still recorded duets with the singer. She separated from him and became a solo artist in 1974. Dolly was a popular singer/songwriter. Dolly was awarded numerous Country Music Association awards (1968-70, 1971-1972, 1975-1976 and 1976). She was a diminutive (5'0") beauty who was perfect for television. In the mid-1970s, Dolly was often appearing on talk-shows and TV specials prior to having her own show, Dolly (1976). Dolly got her first Grammy award in 1977 for Best Female Country Vocal Performance. Dolly's first movie appearance was in the movie 9-to-5 (1980), where she won an Oscar nomination for her song title and Grammy awards 2 and 3. She also won Grammy awards 2, and 3. Best Country Song and Best Female Country Vocal Performance, for the song "Nine to Five." More fame came from her roles in The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas (1982) and as in Rhinestone (1984) in which she sang the hit track "Tennessee Homesick Blues". Dolly Parton Enterprises, worth $100 million, is her biggest. Dollywood was established in Pigeon Forge in Tennessee in 1986 in celebration of her Smoky Mountain roots. In the 1987 television show Dolly, she starred as herself. In 1988, she was awarded another Grammy: Best Country Performance Duo or Group with Vocals, for "Trio".
